Dehradun: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh bulletin warning of significant weather changes in Uttarakhand starting April 24.

A new western disturbance is expected to become active in the Himalayan regions, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall to several districts.

Rain and snowfall in the hills

Districts including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh are likely to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Snowfall is predicted in areas above 4,000 meters, which may increase cold conditions in higher altitudes. Night temperatures in these regions are expected to drop, while daytime conditions will remain cloudy and cool.

On April 25, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, and Nainital. Rainfall intensity may increase further on April 27 and 28, with showers expected in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and other hilly districts.

Heatwave in the plains

While the mountains brace for rain and snow, the plains will face a completely different situation. Districts such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Pantnagar, and Haldwani are expected to remain dry. The sun will be harsh, and temperatures may rise by 1–2 degrees above normal.

Hot winds and humidity will continue, making afternoons uncomfortable. According to the IMD, there is little hope of relief from the scorching sun in the plains until the end of April.

Temperature forecast

– April 24: Minimum 18°C, maximum 36°C.

– April 25: Minimum 19°C, maximum 36°C, cloudy skies, dust storm possible.

– April 26: Minimum 19°C, maximum 36°C, cloudy with chances of rain.

– April 27: Minimum 19°C, maximum 35°C.

– April 28: Minimum 19°C, maximum 34°C.

– April 29: Minimum 18°C, maximum 33°C.

Expert view

Weather experts say the western disturbance will bring temporary relief to hilly districts but will not significantly affect the plains. Snowfall in the mountains may increase cold conditions, while heatwave-like situations will persist in the plains.

Uttarakhand is set to witness contrasting weather patterns this week. While the mountains will see rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall, the plains will continue to battle rising heat and humidity. Residents are advised to stay prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially in high-altitude districts where snowfall and thunderstorms may disrupt travel.
