Tehran: Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is alive and mentally alert but largely out of public view due to severe injuries, according to a report by The New York Times. Four senior officials said, “Though Mr. Khamenei was gravely wounded, he is mentally sharp and engaged.”
He has reportedly undergone multiple surgeries, including three operations on one of his legs and surgery on one hand. He also suffered severe burns to his face and lips, affecting his ability to speak. He is expected to require further procedures, including plastic surgery.
Due to security risks and his condition, Khamenei has avoided public appearances and direct communication since taking over as Iran’s leader. The report suggests this is a deliberate choice, as he “does not want to appear vulnerable or sound weak” at a crucial time.
The report notes, “Messages to him are handwritten, sealed in envelopes and relayed via a human chain in cars and on motorcycles until they reach his hide-out.”
Even senior officials are reportedly avoiding direct contact with the Supreme Leader. “Senior government officials do not visit him, fearing that Israel may trace them to him and kill him,” the report added.
