Charlize Theron says rock climbing for her upcoming Netflix action film ‘Apex’ gave her an unexpected chance to bond with her younger daughter, August. The actor shared that August 11 joined her during training sessions and quickly showed a fearless side on the climbing wall. Theron said the experience helped her through the physically demanding preparation and gave her a fresh way to spend time with her child while working on a high-intensity role.
Charlize Theron's rock climbing with daughter AugustAccording to ANI, Theron spoke about the experience at the New York City premiere of ‘Apex’. She said she trained with professional climber Beth Rodden and brought August along for the sessions. Rodden’s child also joined them, and the two children formed their own adventurous pair as the adults trained nearby.
“She’s a bit of a daredevil,” Theron said at the premiere of ‘Apex’. “Beth and I would be working on one side, and whenever I got tired, I would just look over and the two of them were just going up these walls.”
The actor said watching the children climb without fear helped her stay motivated. She said their simple approach reminded her not to overthink the task at hand.
“It was really good for me to see that,” she added. “Sometimes, as an adult, you get so caught up in the mechanics of it. And then you just look over and these kids who know nothing, they’re just like, ‘Gotta get to the top.’ And you’re like, ‘OK, that’s all I have to do. Just get to the top.’ It was fun to share that with her,” according to E! News.
Charlize Theron's ‘Apex’ training and Mother’s Day plansTheron, who also has a 14-year-old daughter, Jackson, joked about what she wants for Mother’s Day. “They better bring me tea or something in bed. Hint, hint.”
The ‘Atomic Blonde’ star also spoke about why she continues to take on action-heavy roles . She said physical storytelling gives actors a different way to express emotion and character on screen.
“Our physical bodies can say a lot,” she explained. “We as actors sometimes use words as a crutch and when you strip all of that away, it’s a really, really good exercise for actors to really understand that mind and body has to be connected,” according to E! News.
‘Apex’ is set up as a Netflix action film, with Theron’s preparation focused on rigorous rock-climbing training.
