Housewives are distraught when they discover that expensive rice has become infested with insects within days of purchase. Picking rice is a tedious task that can take hours. To save you the effort, we've come up with a clever trick. Adding just two ingredients to the container will keep your rice worm-proof, and your grains will stay fresh for a year.

Many households face problems with microorganisms, small insects, or odors if rice is stored in the kitchen for extended periods. Rice spoils quickly, especially in hot and humid climates. Often, within a few days of purchasing fresh rice, small insects begin to infest the container, putting the entire stock at risk. In such situations, people resort to chemical solutions, but some simple and safe home remedies have been used since ancient times.

Since our grandmothers' time, two ingredients have been used to preserve rice: neem leaves and bay leaves. Their natural fragrance and properties help repel insects. The important thing is that these ingredients are easily available at home and do not affect the quality of the rice. If used correctly, rice can remain clean and safe for a long time.

Why do rice get infested with mites and insects? Humidity, lack of air in closed containers, warm temperatures, and prolonged storage increase the likelihood of mites. Even a slight moisture content in rice when purchased can exacerbate the problem later. Therefore, proper storage is crucial.

First thing – Neem leaves

The scent of its leaves is believed to help repel small insects and pests. To do this, take dried neem leaves and place them in separate layers in a container of rice. You can also place some on top. Make sure the leaves are completely dry to prevent moisture from entering.

Bay leaves are used not only to enhance the flavor of food but also to preserve grains. Their strong natural scent is deterring insects. Place 4 to 5 bay leaves in a container of rice. You can replace the old leaves with new ones every few weeks.

How to use it correctly?
First, spread the rice in the sun for 1 to 2 hours, so that any slight moisture evaporates. Now fill the rice in a completely dry and clean airtight container. While filling, put neem leaves and bay leaves in the middle. Then close the lid properly. This will keep the rice safe for a long time. Always use a dry spoon or bowl while taking out the rice. Wet hands or wet utensils increase the risk of insects. Do not keep the container in a damp place. Try to keep the rice in a cool and dry place.

What to do if mites are already present
If mites are already visible in the rice, spread them in the sun. A few hours of sunlight can reduce the insects. After this, clean them and fill them in a new container and then add neem leaves and bay leaves. There is no need for expensive sprays or chemicals, two simple things like neem leaves and bay leaves can help in keeping the rice safe. This is an easy, cheap and old reliable method, which is still followed in many homes.
