New Delhi: The Birmingham Crown Court sentenced life imprisonment to a UK resident who pleaded guilty to the religiously aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in Walsall on Friday.

The accused, identified as John Ashby, a 32-year-old man, was arrested in October, 2025, just days after he committed the crime. Ashby initially denied the charges of sexual assault, strangulation, racially aggravated actual bodily harm, and robbery, but after months of interrogation, he finally admitted his crime.

The crime sent shockwaves through the West Midlands community after multiple charges against him. The court sentenced him to life, with a minimum term of 14 years before he could be considered for parole based on his behaviour behind bars.

Justice Pepperall described Ashby as a very dangerous man and posed an extreme danger to women after the court had previously heard that he had directed anti-Muslim rants at the woman during the attack.

“I have no doubt that you are a very dangerous man, and you pose an extreme danger to women, and there is no reliable way to say how long you will remain a danger,” Justice Pepperall said to Ashby during the sentencing hearing.

A BBC court report has reported that Justice Pepperall looked into several factors, such as Ashby’s drug use, previous offence, beating her with a weapon, and the ‘severe psychological harm’ his actions had on the victim for being targeted in her own home, leading to a life sentence ruling.

The CCTV footage revealed that Ashby followed the victim from the bus stop to her house. The victim also shared how the attack changed every part of life.

“Immediately after the incident, I knew I had to move house. I could not go back into the place I once called home,” she said in her statement.

After Ashby pleaded guilty, the victim was also in the court and said she finally felt free and no longer trapped.
