X (formerly Twitter) is making a major shift in its platform strategy. The company has announced that its Communities feature will be discontinued from May 30, making way for a more advanced, AI-driven system called Custom Timelines.
This change aims to deliver a more personalized, cleaner, and smarter content experience for users.
Why Is X Removing the Communities Feature?According to Nikita Bier, the Communities feature failed to gain widespread adoption.
Key reasons behind its shutdown:
- Only 0.4% of users actively used it
- Around 80% of spam reports, including scams and malware, were linked to Communities
- Low engagement combined with high misuse made it unsustainable
📌 Despite having a strong concept, the feature struggled with real-world usage and safety concerns.
What Is ‘Custom Timelines’?The new Custom Timelines feature is powered by Grok, bringing artificial intelligence into how content is curated.
Unlike traditional feeds that rely mainly on keywords, this system:
- Analyzes posts using AI
- Understands context and meaning
- Categorizes content more accurately
👉 Result: A more relevant and personalized feed tailored to your interests.
How Custom Timelines Will WorkThe new system offers multiple features to enhance user control:
- Access to 75+ topics to choose from
- Ability to pin up to 10 topics at once
- Easy switching between feeds from the home tab
- Option to reorganize feeds based on preference
Users can temporarily mute unwanted topics:
- Snooze any topic (like politics or sports)
- Mute duration: 24 hours
- Helps reduce clutter and unwanted content
Currently, the rollout is limited:
- Available for Premium users on iOS
- Web users already have access to Snooze feature
- Android rollout expected soon
This transition reflects X’s shift toward AI-driven personalization.
With Custom Timelines, users can expect:
- More relevant content
- Less spam and clutter
- Better control over what they see
- A cleaner and more engaging experience
The removal of Communities marks the end of an underused feature, but the introduction of AI-powered Custom Timelines signals a bigger evolution for X.
By leveraging Grok, the platform is aiming to deliver smarter, more personalized feeds—potentially redefining how users interact with social media content in the future.
