Delhi. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday that a new system of toll collection will be implemented on many national highways of the country without any interruption by December. Addressing the second edition of ‘Logistics Shakti Summit and Awards 2026’, Gadkari said that it is necessary to reduce transportation costs by improving infrastructure facilities in the country.

Gadkari said that under this new system, drivers will not need to stop at toll plazas. This system will be based on advanced technologies, which will include vehicle number recognition system and electronic systems like Fastag. In this system, vehicles will be identified through high-speed cameras and sensors and toll fees will be collected automatically on the same basis.

He said that notices will be sent digitally to those who do not follow the rules. If payment is not made, Fastag can be stopped and other actions to the vehicle can also be taken. Gadkari said that if India has to become a global power, it will have to bring its transportation costs down to single digits.

He said that according to a recent report, the construction of expressways and economic corridors in the country has reduced the transportation cost from 16 percent to about 10 percent. He said that in America and Europe this cost is about 12 percent, whereas in China it is between eight to 10 percent.

Referring to the situation in West Asia, Gadkari said that India fulfills 87 percent of its oil needs through imports. He said that the country imports fossil fuels worth about Rs 22 lakh crore every year, which also increases pollution. He said that in view of this situation there is a need to increase the production of alternative and biofuels.
