IKEA has confirmed plans to partially scrap a popular product range a quarter of a century after it was launched. The Swedish retailer's MALM range of storage units and bedroom products have become a defining feature of its homeware collection since being introduced in 2002. But parts of the furniture range will be phased out from branches across IKEA's global portfolio from this summer, with all stock set to disappear by 2027.
An IKEA spokesperson said: "We know our products carry real and special meaning in homes all over the world and we are committed to meeting people in ways that reflect how they live today. As part of that commitment, parts of the MALM range will be phased out globally as we introduce more options built around the preferences and needs of people today."
Among the products set to be axed are bedside tables, bed frames and many, though not all, of the MALM range's dressing tables and chests of drawers.
The news comes after IKEA launched its first-ever "hybrid" store in the UK this week, partnering with sports retailer Decathlon to stock over 5,000 products from the French brand in a 12,787-square-foot unit in Croydon, south London.
Kim Chin-Sung, market manager for IKEA Croydon, said: "We first opened IKEA Croydon back in 1992 and since then, the way people shop has changed.
"At IKEA, we believe that our physical stores have a vital role to play, as a shopping destination and to inspire customers.
"The new Decathalon unit coming to IKEA Croydon is the latest example of us investing in and reimagining our stores to ensure customers and co-workers continue to get the most out of these spaces."
Monica Cedres, London City director, Decathlon UK, added: "We've been looking forward to this day, and after a true team effort, we can't wait to finally jump into action alongside our neighbours at IKEA.
"This partnership is all about making an active lifestyle as easy as a trip to IKEA. Croydon is a borough full of energy, and whether you're looking for technical help with a PB or just grabbing your home and sport essentials in one go, we're ready to help South London discover the joy of being active together."
