A confrontation between a convenience store owner and a couple from Gujarat turned disastrous in Louisiana, resulting in a gunshot that critically injured a 30-year-old woman. The woman's husband has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, while she remains in critical condition, facing a long road to recovery that will involve several surgeries.

The unfortunate event unfolded on April 4 at Mezo Grocery and Deli in Bossier City. The victim, identified as Jigisha, also known as Soniya Gajera, sustained severe facial injuries when a firearm accidentally discharged. Reports indicate that the weapon was held by her husband, Sharad Gajera, when it went off at close range, causing a bullet to pass through her mouth and exit through her jaw. Sharad was arrested on April 21 after turning himself in following a warrant for his arrest, facing charges related to the illegal use of a firearm. According to police, the couple was in discussions with the store owner, Vince Mezo, regarding a potential purchase of the store at the time of the incident.

While law enforcement has labeled the shooting as accidental, the details surrounding the event have sparked skepticism. Eyewitnesses reported that the couple was engaged in conversation with the store owner when the gunshot was heard. Many witnesses expressed doubts about the claim of an accident, highlighting the dangers of carrying a loaded firearm in a public setting. Soniya's injuries are severe and life-altering; the bullet's impact has left her unable to eat normally, causing significant damage to her teeth, jaw, and lower lip. Currently, she relies on assisted breathing and artificial nutrition while remaining in a delicate condition at a local hospital.

In response to her medical needs, community members have initiated a crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising $200,000 (approximately Rs 1.9 crore) to cover her escalating medical bills. Medical professionals have indicated that her recovery will be lengthy and complicated, necessitating multiple procedures, including jaw and facial reconstruction, as well as dental implants. Despite ongoing treatment, her family has expressed uncertainty about the possibility of a full recovery. Authorities have not released any information regarding the couple's immigration status.
