From playing at small gatherings to becoming a familiar name at high-profile Bollywood parties and celebrity events, DJ Ganesh has built his career steadily over the years. His work today spans curated industry gatherings, private celebrations and large-scale events, but the journey began far from the spotlight, shaped by early struggles and a hands-on understanding of music.
Tracing that journey back, he says, “I started working when I was around 12, doing small jobs to support my family. Music was always around me, and over time, it became more than just an interest; it became my escape and identity. I entered DJing by assisting a local sound vendor, loading speakers, and observing closely. Gradually, I learnt how to mix and understand music. There was no formal training; it was all based on experience, observation, and consistency. What drew me in was the power of music to instantly change energy. That feeling stayed with me.”
A key aspect of his work, he says, is the ability to read the room, which, in his view, defines the difference between playing music and creating an experience. He explains, “It’s not just about music; it’s about understanding people. At high-profile events, you’re not simply playing popular tracks; you’re reading the room, sensing the mood and creating moments. It comes from observing reactions, body language, and engagement. You have to sense when the energy is rising or dropping and adjust immediately. Sometimes, a small transition or a familiar hook can completely shift the atmosphere. I focus on transitions, custom mashups, and maintaining energy throughout the night. Having played for a wide range of audiences helps me adapt quickly.”
That consistency has also translated into larger opportunities, including his association with Ba***ds of Bollywood. He says, “The opportunity came through the consistent work I had been putting out over the years. My mashups and remixes reached the right audience, which led to the collaboration. Being associated with a project like that was a big moment because it connected my independent sound with a larger platform,” he says. Speaking about the song launch of the series, he adds, “It was a very professional and well-curated setup. Aryan Khan has a clear vision and understanding of the space he’s working in. Everything was executed with attention to detail.”
His work has also brought him close to some of the biggest names in the industry, something he views in the context of where he started. He says, “I’ve had the opportunity to be around Shah Rukh Khan at events. He has a very strong presence, and there’s a certain warmth in the way he interacts. Moments like that stay with you.” Recalling a few such experiences, he adds, “Once, I was playing for him and got the chance to meet him. He mentioned that he knew about my mixes and even signed my laptop. That autograph is something I’ll always keep. There was another time when Salman Khan liked my set so much that he invited me home for dinner.”
While large-scale events come with their own energy, he says more intimate settings, including celebrity weddings such as those of Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda , where he has performed, demand a different kind of precision. He shares, “Celebrity weddings are more intimate and detail-oriented. There is an expectation in terms of quality, but there is also a lot of trust given to the artist. Once you understand the brief, you are allowed to create freely. The audience is very aware of music, so your execution has to be precise. It’s less about volume and more about timing and connection.”
That approach extends to how he builds his sets across varied audiences. He says, “It starts with preparation and understanding the audience. I usually study preferences, past events and the overall expected vibe. Beyond that, it’s about building a flow that connects different tastes seamlessly. The idea is to create a journey where everyone finds their moment on the dance floor.”
For him, staying relevant is less about chasing trends and more about staying engaged with the craft. “I believe staying connected to the audience is the biggest factor. I keep performing at different kinds of events, clubs, weddings and private shows, because each space teaches you something new. I also keep working on new mashups and sounds to avoid repetition. Consistency and curiosity help me stay fresh,” he concludes.
