There was a huge uproar on Saturday outside the house of international cricket legend Harbhajan Singh in Jalandhar. Activists of the youth wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demonstrated outside ‘Bhajji’s house and wrote ‘Traitor’ on the wall near his nameplate. This anger erupted when the news came that 7 Rajya Sabha MPs of ‘AAP’ including Harbhajan Singh have left the party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Strong demonstration outside Bhajji’s house and LPU
The anger of AAP workers was at its peak in Jalandhar on Saturday afternoon. Activists also protested outside Lovely Professional University (LPU) and burnt the effigy of University Chancellor and Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal. The protesters sprayed black spray on the posters of Ashok Mittal put up outside the university and raised slogans against him. The workers alleged that these MPs have betrayed Punjab and the party.
There was a heated clash between the workers and the police
During the demonstration, members of the AAP Youth Wing arrived with black bands tied on their heads. When the activists were writing ‘traitor’ outside Harbhajan Singh’s house, the police personnel deployed there tried to stop them. During this, there was a scuffle and heated argument between the protesters and the police. Activists said that leaders like Harbhajan Singh, Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak and Swati Maliwal have insulted the mandate by joining BJP.
Bhagwant Mann also called MPs ‘traitors’
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken a tough stance on this entire political drama. A day earlier, he had termed these MPs as ‘traitors’ and said that BJP is scared of the popularity of his government. Mann sarcastically said, “BJP must have got the survey done that their position is not strong, hence an attempt was made to break our party.” Taking aim at Amit Shah, he said that BJP is not able to digest that there is no alternative to Bhagwant Mann in Punjab. Mann also said that Punjabis love with all their heart, but remember those who betray them for generations.
Stir in Punjab politics due to departure of 7 MPs
It is noteworthy that Raghav Chadha, Harbhajan Singh, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Swati Maliwal, Vikram Sahni and Rajinder Gupta have decided to merge with BJP in Rajya Sabha. AAP leaders allege that these MPs have taken this step to save their chair and out of fear of investigating agencies. The protesters have warned that they will not allow these leaders to enter the villages and cities of Punjab.
