A boat migrant raped a teenage girl within three months of arriving in the UK but was allowed to walk free by a judge if he took lessons on consent. The teenager attacked the girl of the same age last September after they had been attending the same school, the court was told.
The boy and his victim had met at school before bumping into each other on September 23, 2025, when he forcibly led her to bushes by a skate park and put her to the ground. The teen then reportedly wrote about the attack on social media. The 14-year-old has been ordered to attend an awareness programme as part of his sentence - a decision that has stunned the victim's family, who had expected a custodial punishment.
The teenage boy was convicted in January of rape and two counts of sexual assault and was sentenced in March, the Sun reports.
Prosecutor Cassandra Roberts told the court that the defendant asked the victim to "do stuff" before he overpowered her. She said: "She was saying 'Get off me' and 'No', and this was ignored."
The boy received a rehabilitation order. As part of it, he must attend specialist sessions focused on understanding consent, personal boundaries, and the impact on victims.
A two-year exclusion order was also imposed, preventing him from returning to the location of the incident or the surrounding area.
The court heard that he arrived in the country in June 2025 as an unaccompanied minor, having crossed by small boat. Documents seen by the Sun indicate he was not placed in a young offender institution as custody is considered a last resort in youth justice.
A source close to the family told The Sun on Sunday: "The victim's family are furious. They're outraged. This sentence is a total joke.
"There has been no punishment. This isn't a deterrent at all. The rapist is still free and could just do it again.
"The victim has to carry this for the rest of her life, while he can just go out as if nothing has happened."
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: "This vile attacker should be locked up for his crimes. Custody should be the only punishment for rapists.
"These attacks continue to happen under this weak Labour Government who have lost control of our borders.
"The only way to fix this is the Conservative Party's Borders plan - leave the ECHR so we can deport all illegal immigrants and foreign national offenders."
In England and Wales, youth custody is used as a last resort, meaning courts must first consider community-based sentences and rehabilitation options.
It comes after two asylum seekers were found guilty of repeatedly raping a woman on Brighton beach while a third, who prosecutors say was convicted of murder in Egypt, filmed the attack.
Egyptian national Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, and Iranian national Abdulla Ahmadi, 26, took her behind a beach hut in the East Sussex city where they raped her while Karin Al-Danasurt, 20, filmed it.
