Suvarnabhumi Airport officially opened in 2006 as Thailand’s primary international gateway, built to accommodate rapidly rising passenger traffic.
The airport took over most international operations from Don Mueang International Airport, which had become overcrowded, allowing for more efficient handling of long-haul and regional flights.
Its opening marked a new era for Thailand’s aviation industry, providing state-of-the-art facilities and increased capacity.
Covering an area of 50 square kilometers, Vietnam’s Long Thanh International Airport is set to replace Suvarnabhumi Airport as Southeast Asia’s second-largest airport when it begins commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2026.
