Manchester United could hold a slight yet meaningful advantage in their chase for Aurelien Tchouameni - and it goes beyond transfer fees and wages. The Real Madrid midfielder, 26, has been linked with a possible £65million switch to Old Trafford, as United aim to strengthen their midfield ahead of next season.
With Casemiro set to leave in the summer, reinforcing the centre of the park has become a priority. Tchouameni ranks highly on United's list of targets, though convincing both the player and Real Madrid - who consider the French international a key player - to part ways will be far from easy. Nevertheless, United can present more than financial incentives - they can appeal to familiarity and status.
Casemiro's departure means the No. 18 shirt will soon be available, a number Tchouameni wore in his first two years in Spain. The No. 14 jersey is also free, previously held by Christian Eriksen. Notably, Tchouameni wore No. 14 at Madrid until switching to No. 8 in 2024 and has also worn it while representing France.
Naturally, shirt numbers alone will not secure the transfer - but United can also emphasise their positive trajectory. Qualification for the Champions League is within reach, with a solid gap over sixth-placed Brighton and confidence is growing after a strong revival under interim manager Michael Carrick.
There is also a wider plan unfolding. Defensive additions came in 2024, attacking reinforcements followed in 2025 and now attention has clearly turned to the midfield. At least one signing is expected, though several options are being explored.
Players like Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Carlos Baleba (Brighton) have all been mentioned. However, Tchouameni has quickly moved to the top of their priority list in recent weeks.
The Los Blancos midfielder remains under contract until 2028 and Real Madrid are said to be eager to extend his deal. Even so, if any doubts emerge about his long-term position, United could see an opening to begin discussions.
United's interest is nothing new. They monitored Tchouameni closely during his time at Monaco before his 2022 transfer to Madrid, where he has developed into one of the game's most accomplished midfielders.
Securing his signature now would demand a major financial commitment, both in terms of transfer fee and wages. However, United's financial situation is stronger than it might seem.
The anticipated exits of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho - with Marcus Rashford also potentially leaving - would create significant room within the wage structure.
For Tchouameni, United's message is straightforward: an important role in the squad, familiar elements and a club rebuilding with purpose - not merely pursuing success, but constructing a foundation for it.
