Michael Crosses $200M Worldwide, Becomes Biggest Musical Biopic Opening Beating Bohemian Rhapsody

Michael Jackson's biopic Michael is making all the noise at the box office. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film is still on track to break global box-office records for musical biopics. In India, where Michael Jackson enjoys a massive fan following, audiences have turned out in large numbers, pushing the film to the top of the box office. Globally, the film has broken all records and has amassed over $206.4M Worldwide, as per Deadline.

Michael stars Jaafar Jackson in the titular role portraying his uncle on the big screen.

Michael breaks box office record, earns over $200M worldwide

Michael has clearly outperformed other musical biopic openings in the opening weekend, leaving Straight Outta Compton ($60.2M) and Bohemian Rhapsody ($51M) far behind in the race. As per a tweet by journalist from Fandango, Michael has the highest grossing opening weekend ever for a music biopic.

The tweet read, “BOX OFFICE: With $39.5M opening day and an expected $95-100M+ opening weekend (domestic), #Michael will have the #1 highest grossing opening weekend ever for a music biopic. Will be Lionsgate’s biggest opening in the post-Covid era.”

And as per Boxofficereport.com, globally the film has amassed $201.4M - $211.4M.

The tweet read, “Studio Estimates for Michael through the end of Sunday: Domestic (Lionsgate) - $90M - $100M International (Universal) - $111.4M Global - $201.4M - $211.4M #MichaelMovie #BoxOffice.”

Talking about the film's massive success, the Lionsgate team gave a statement, “This record-breaking performance is a testament to the incredible filmmaking team of producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, an amazing cast led by Jaafar Jackson’s singular performance, our world-class partners at Universal, the cooperation and support of the Michael Jackson Estate, and our tireless and exceptionally talented Lionsgate team. In India, as per reports, Michael collected around Rs 5 crore nett from 3,190 shows, pushing its total domestic net to Rs 10.30 crore. The film’s overall gross collection in India currently stands at Rs 12.36 crore.

Helmed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the biopic features Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael, alongside Miles Teller as John Branca, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Kat Graham as Diana Ross, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones.
