Didn't sulk during India snub, focused on scoring runs in domestic cricket: Ishan Kishan

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has said he chose hard work over frustration during his nearly two-year absence from the national team, focusing on consistent performances in domestic cricket to earn a recall.

Kishan made his return to India national cricket team earlier this year for the T20I series against New Zealand national cricket team and the T20 World Cup, following an impressive domestic season. He led Jharkhand cricket team to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, scoring over 500 runs in the tournament.

“When I was out of the team, I told myself there was no point in sulking. It’s the easiest thing for any sportsperson to do—it may bring sympathy, but it won’t take you forward,” Kishan said.

“The only way back was through performance. I focused on improving my game and scoring as many runs as possible, even if it meant playing more aggressively and hitting more sixes,” he added.

Kishan noted that his time away from the national setup strengthened his hunger and respect for the game, pushing him to deliver consistently.

“Only consistent run-scoring can bring you back. If 300 runs aren’t enough, aim for 400; if that’s not enough, go for 500. Cricket is our livelihood, and being away from the team makes you value every opportunity more,” he said.

“The goal was simple—to come back stronger and become the best version of myself,” Kishan added.
