The IPL introduced the Impact Player rule in 2023. The rule allows teams to substitute one player from their starting lineup with any of their five designated backup players during any moment of the match. Teams have primarily utilized their impact option after completing their first batting session since that time.
The team that bats first typically chooses to bowl in the second half of the match while the team that pitches first selects an additional batsman to strengthen its team. Yet teams do not always adhere to this established method.
Teams use their impact substitute during the first innings after they experience challenges. The batting team executes this strategy after they suffer multiple early wickets because it endangers their chances of achieving a substantial score.
CSK began their batting after GT captain Shubman Gill selected to field during their IPL match at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The pitch provided pacers with an advantage because Kagiso Rabada successfully dismissed Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel within two consecutive deliveries.
Many people expected Dewald Brevis to bat at number four when CSK lost their second wicket. The Super Kings instead surprised everyone by bringing Sarfaraz Khan to bat at number four during their first four overs through their impact player option.
The early move backfired, as Sarfaraz mistimed a pull shot and walked back for a golden duck. CSK used Sarfaraz within four overs which raised a question about whether this marked the earliest application of an impact substitute in IPL history. The answer is no.
The first occurrence took place during the IPL 2024 match between the Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals. Dewald Brevis entered the match as an impact player to replace Naman Dhir, who sustained an injury during the first-over delivery. Dhir got out for a duck, and MI brought in Brevis as the impact player but the move failed again when South African player departed for a duck.

Multiple people predicted that the right-handed batter would remain on the bench until IPL 2026 started. The team had to include him because MS Dhoni and Brevis suffered injuries, which enabled Sarfaraz to seize his opportunity.
He became a reliable choice for CSK when he delivered fast scoring performances which included scoring between 20 and 30 points and achieving a quick fifty. The duck against GT marked Sarfaraz Khan’s first single-digit score this season, as he has scored 161 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 171.
