Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, wrote in an X Post on Sunday, “The murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee by TMC-affiliated goons after the elections is highly condemnable. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Today, there is no democracy in West Bengal, but TMC’s goon rule. Intimidating, killing, eradicating opposition voices after the vote – this has become the character of TMC. Congress’s politics never rested on violence, and never will.” We have also lost our workers, yet we have always chosen the path of non-violence, this is our resolve.”
The Congress MP further wrote, “The demand is clear – all the culprits should be immediately arrested, strictest punishment should be given, and full security and compensation should be ensured to Debdeep’s family. We will not bow down to this politics which tarnishes India’s non-violent tradition. Justice will be done.”
murder over minor dispute
According to media reports, Piyali Chatterjee, wife of deceased 43-year-old Debdeep Chatterjee, told that at around 1 am on Saturday night, he was returning home by car after attending a birthday party. Piyali said, “My husband was driving. As we reached in front of our housing complex in Asansol city, our car collided with a motorcycle parked on the roadside. Some local youth were sitting near the motorcycle; they came and stopped the car.
“My husband came out of our car and apologized for the incident, but those youths started fighting,” Piyali said. He said Debdeep told the youth that he would call local Congress leader Prasenjit Puitandi, who is the secretary of the housing society, as the incident took place right in front of the couple’s residential complex. She said, “Suddenly, those youths started beating my husband. My son and I folded our hands and requested them to leave them, but they kept attacking my husband.”

Suddenly, one of the youth punched Debdeep and pushed him to the ground. He fell on the road, and as soon as his head hit the ground, he became unconscious. Debdeep was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Local Congress leaders alleged that the people who attacked Debdeep were associates of local Trinamool Congress councilor Animesh Das. However, the councilor said that he was out of the city and had no knowledge about the incident.
