A stunning Italian region, the backdrop for an iconic Bond film, is offering Brits €100,000 (£83,565) to pack their bags and move there for good.

The Trentino area in northern Italy was the backdrop for Daniel Craig's iconic and stunning car chase in the opening scene of Quantum of Solace. It is also just a stone's throw from Lake Garda.

The swathes of beautiful countryside are full of abandoned houses - and all you have to do is renovate one of them. As it stands - derelict homes outnumber occupied ones across the 33 towns being considered for the project.

Those who take part will receive €20,000 (£16,720) towards purchasing an empty property, along with a grant of €80,000 (£66,879) to carry out renovations.

A further condition of the scheme is people must commit to living in or renting out the property for 10 years, or risk being required to repay the grant.

Additionally, participants may apply for contributions covering a maximum of three properties per village and must keep rental prices at a "moderate" rate.

Renovation costs must not exceed €200,000 (£167,197), meaning new owners cannot spend more than €120,000 (£100,319.40) of their own money on upgrading a property.

Anyone under the age of 45 who already lives in the area is not allowed to apply to the programme, according to CNN.

"It is a measure aimed at creating an identity community network in contexts of strong depopulation," said the Trentino province in a statement.

Maurizio Fugatti, president of Trento, said the "experimental action" is aimed at "strengthening social cohesion in the Trentino area".

Immobiliare News reported Trento's local council has €10 million (£8.4 million) set aside over two years to fund the project. The complete list of qualifying municipalities is yet to be announced, though towns such as Val di Non, where depopulation has surpassed 11 per cent, are expected to feature.

The Trentino region boasts a breathtaking landscape, encompassing the Dolomites and numerous historical sites. Visitors delight in exploring the area's natural beauty and rich culture, as well as the many charming villages scattered throughout the region.

In the north-east of Italy, at the heart of the Italian Alps between Lake Garda and the mountains, the region also benefits from excellent transport links to major cities, with Milan just under three hours away, Venice just over two hours away and Verona just under an hour away via train.

The regional capital, Trento, is renowned for hosting the historic sixteenth-century Council and for Trentodoc - a spumante, sparkling wine.

The city is adorned with Renaissance frescoes decorating the walls of its historic centre. Among its must-see attractions are MUSE - the cutting-edge museum of natural science - and the Castello del Buonconsiglio, which showcases the stunning Gothic frescoes of Torre dell'Aquila.

During winter, the region offers more than 800 kilometres of ski slopes, while summer visitors can take advantage of hiking, mountain biking and climbing throughout the area.
