A shocking knife attack in Mumbai’s Mira Road has raised serious concerns after a 31-year-old man allegedly questioned two security guards about their religion before assaulting them.

According to police, the accused — identified as Zaib Zubair Ansari — asked the guards about their faith and whether they could recite the Kalma. When they refused, he allegedly attacked them with a knife.

The incident took place around 4 am on Monday in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road, where the accused targeted two security guards posted at an under-construction building. The injured guards have been identified as Subroto Sen and Rajkumar Mishra. Mishra is reported to be in critical condition, while Sen is said to be out of danger.

Police said the guards managed to escape by rushing into a nearby security cabin and locking the door, which likely saved their lives. After the attack, the accused fled the scene. Sen later informed the police, and both injured men were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A team from Naya Nagar police station reached the spot immediately and, with the help of CCTV footage, tracked down and arrested the accused within 90 minutes from his rented residence in Mira Road East.

During preliminary investigation, police found that Ansari is a science graduate who had studied in the United States until 2019 before returning to India due to lack of employment. He had reportedly been living alone in a rented apartment in Mira Road. Sources also revealed that he had been watching alleged propaganda videos linked to ISIS, raising concerns about possible radical influence.

Further findings suggest that Ansari had been asked by his landlord to vacate his rented accommodation by May 5. Until a few months ago, he was working as a teacher at a coaching centre, where he taught chemistry and mathematics.

The case has now been handed over to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for deeper investigation. Authorities are probing whether the attack has any ideological or extremist links.

In an official statement, police have urged citizens not to spread rumours or unverified information related to the incident, warning that strict legal action will be taken against those found circulating misinformation.
