Password Vs. Passkey: In this digital era, a significant portion of our lives has shifted to online platforms. From banking to social media, passwords are required everywhere for logging in. However, constantly remembering passwords, keeping them secure, and protecting them from hacking is no easy task. The new "Passkeys" system has emerged as a solution to this very problem.
What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys represent a login method that eliminates the need for you to type in a password. This technology verifies your identity using biometric data available on your device—such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or a PIN. In other words, the hassle of remembering passwords is finally coming to an end.
How Does This System Work?
Passkeys are fundamentally based on public-key cryptography. This system generates two types of "keys": one public and one private. The public key is stored on the server, while the private key remains securely stored on your device and never leaves it. When you attempt to log in, your device uses the private key to confirm your identity. This makes it extremely difficult for hackers to gain access to your account.
Why Are They More Secure Than Passwords?
Passwords are often weak, reused, or prone to leaks, which increases the risk of hacking. In contrast, passkeys involve no actual password to remember, nor can they be stolen. This system is also considered highly resistant to phishing attacks, as the user never enters a password on a fake website. Furthermore, a unique cryptographic signature is generated for every login attempt, thereby further strengthening security.
Which Companies Have Adopted Them?
Today, many major tech companies have begun adopting this new technology. Industry giants such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft are now offering passkey support across their platforms. In the near future, this method is expected to become even more widespread. While passkeys are widely regarded as highly secure, they do present certain challenges as well. If your device gets lost or damaged, accessing your account can become somewhat difficult.
However, companies are now offering features such as backup options and cloud synchronization to address this. Passkey technology has the potential to bring about a major shift in digital security. It not only simplifies the login process but also significantly reduces the risk of hacking.
