US tech giant Google on Tuesday announced two major developments in India—launching Aadhaar-based digital identity features in Google Wallet and laying the foundation for a massive AI data hub in Visakhapatnam.

In a significant step towards digital identity adoption, Google said Indian users can now store Aadhaar verifiable credentials in Google Wallet, enabling secure, digital-first identity verification. Built in partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India, the feature allows users to share only necessary information through selective disclosure, ensuring privacy and security.

The integration will support everyday use cases such as age verification for entertainment and trusted interactions across platforms like BharatMatrimony and Atlys. Initial partners include PVR INOX for age checks and rewards, while platforms like Mygate and Snabbit are expected to adopt the feature for service and delivery verification.

At the same time, in a major boost to India’s digital infrastructure, N. Chandrababu Naidu and Ashwini Vaishnaw laid the foundation stone for the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam.

The project, backed by a massive $15 billion investment, will include a 1-gigawatt data centre spread across nearly 600 acres, making it one of the largest foreign direct investments in India and potentially the biggest data centre in Asia.

Calling it a “game-changer,” Naidu said the project would position Andhra Pradesh as India’s AI data gateway and generate large-scale employment. He also highlighted plans to enhance governance using AI tools and accelerate infrastructure development in the region.

Union Minister Vaishnaw noted that the project aligns with India’s ambition to lead the next wave of technology, emphasising the country’s growing strength in electronics manufacturing and its role as a trusted global tech partner.

Google added that the initiative will strengthen India’s digital backbone through sub-sea connectivity and advanced AI infrastructure, supporting the broader vision of a technology-driven economy.
