Women voters are outnumbering men in many West Bengal assembly segments for the second phase of polling. This trend is prominent in urban areas around Kolkata and Salt Lake.
Despite the voter roll pruning under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), women electors outnumber men in 23 of the 142 assembly segments going to polls in West Bengal’s second and final phase on Wednesday — a pattern concentrated largely in and around Kolkata and Salt Lake.

Leading the list is Jadavpur, where women voters exceed men by 11,759. Behala West follows, with about 1.37 lakh women compared to 1.28 lakh men. Other key constituencies with a significant female voter surplus include Tollygunge, Behala East, Dum Dum, Bidhannagar, Rajarhat Gopalpur, Rashbehari, Baranagar and Burdwan South. At the lower end of the spectrum are Barasat, with 373 more women voters, and Champdani in Hooghly, where the gap stands at 122.

The trend is evident across several urban constituencies. Bidhannagar has 1,04,979 women voters against 98,891 men, Rashbehari 82,137 women versus 76,263 men, Baranagar 95,847 women compared to 90,690 men, and Kasba 1,34,158 women against 1,31,451 men. Panihati — where the BJP has fielded the RG Kar victim’s mother as its candidate — is also among the seats with more women voters than men.

A similar pattern was visible in the first phase of polling on April 23, when 18 assembly segments recorded higher female turnout than male. Kurseong topped that list with 87,002 women voters compared to 83,405 men. Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar saw 1.41 lakh women voting against 1.37 lakh men, while Darjeeling and Kalimpong also reported higher participation by women. Karandighi in North Dinajpur and Phansidewa in Darjeeling district were the other constituencies where women outvoted men.

Notably, this trend has persisted despite the SIR exercise reducing the voter gender ratio to 950 across the 16 districts that voted in the first phase. Election Commission data showed that women voters turned out in greater numbers, with turnout at 92.7% across 152 assembly segments, compared with 91% for men.

Final turnout figures for the current phase are yet to be released.
