A local construction worker who was helping erect the stage for Shakira's upcoming Brazil concert has sadly died after suffering "crushing injuries", organisers have announced. On Sunday (April 26), the spokesperson on behalf of the gig organisers took to social media to share a statement about the horrific accident. It read: "An accident this Sunday afternoon tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show.

A state fire brigade later confirmed to People: "A worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system. Before the arrival of emergency teams, the victim had already been removed from the equipment by other employees present."

The unnamed worker was then rushed to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Hips Don't Lie singer's Todo Mundo No Rio concert is still scheduled to take place in Rio, Brazil, on Saturday (May 2), but it is not yet clear if the concert will go ahead as planned.

It is understood that the worker killed was a local and not part of Shakira's crew, slated to arrive in Rio later this week. The area around the stage set up was seen roped off with caution tape following the construction worker's passing.

The city's mayor confirmed Shakira as the lead headliner of the Brazilian concert. The event takes place on Copacaban Beach and regularly attracts millions of tourists every year.

The singer announced the exciting opportunity on February 12 with a video she shared with her loyal legion of followers on Instagram. Gushing that this was "the most dreamed-of concert of my life", she gushed: "We're going to have so much fun!"

Last weekend, she returned to Instagram to share her excitement of the upcoming performance, writing: "Almost there, Rio!!! Prepping so many surprises for you: guest artists, new wardrobe, songs you'll love to hear... Can't wait to be there... no altar do planeta!!"

Shakira most recently toured in 2025 with her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour, which launched in South Africa last February. However, she was forced to cancel a concert in Lima, Peru, after she was hospitalised with an abdominal issue.

One week later, she was forced to cancel another concert in Medellin, Colombia, following concerns about the safety of the stage. Similar stage concerns were raised for two scheduled shows in Santiago, Chile.

The singer then had to reschedule concerts in Boston and at the World Pride 2025 event in the heart of Washington, D.C, due to equipment issues.
