Michael Portillo was back on Channel 5 this evening with his new series, Michael Portillo in Stockholm. The star headed to the capital of Sweden for a mid-winter expedition as he explored the country's traditions.
His visit included a royal banquet, where he was bowled over to see one of the world's largest banqueting tables which was set up, ready to host for 170 VIPs including France's President, Emmanuel Macron. Michael was treated to a sneak peek of what goes on behind the scenes of a state visit. He shared that the royal palace was due to hold its first state visit in over a year and he was lucky enough to get an inside glimpse of the banquet hall. Entering through doors which held a sign which read "entrance forbidden", Michael realised just how fortunate he actually was. "But we go in anyway," he joked.
As he opened the doors to take in the view before him, he exclaimed: "Oh my goodness. What a magnificent sight." He added: "You know, I've been to state banquets in Buckingham Palace but I don't think I've ever seen a table this big," he said, referring to a dining table before him which was "around four or five metres long".
But then something quite concerning quickly caught his eye. A royal steward named Kurt was to the side of him, overlooking the dining room, armed with a gigantic sword.
"What a glorious uniform you have," Michael commented, as he appeared to be in awe before pointing out the scary-looking weapon. "I see you need a sword to carry out your duties?"
"Yes," replied Kurt. "You never know what might happen." Michael looked somewhat uneasy before the guard then added: "It's a symbol for my uniform and my position."
They then moved on to the preparations in place for the visit as it was explained that every plate, glass and piece of cutlery was perfectly laid out across the table using measuring tapes.
Michael explained to the audience: "Hosting a dinner like this requires the work of 42 footmen with specific roles. But where royal hospitality is involved, not all place settings are equal."
The royal family members have their napkins laid out in a "special" way. "It's quite fantastic," remarked Michael.
Kurt also pointed out a "safe" food option for the royals. He explained how they have egg cups added to their table setting because eggs "can't be poisoned".
Michael eventually wished Kurt well as he said that he hoped everything went according to plan and "hopefully you won't have to use your sword."
