Liverpool news: FSG sack coach and staff as Steven Gerrard 'in frame for job'

Liverpool are on track to secure qualification for next season's Champions League following a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Arne Slot's side now occupy fourth position with four fixtures remaining. The Reds had appeared destined to face a difficult challenge to qualify for UEFA's flagship competition, but three successive victories have them virtually guaranteed to finish inside the top five.

Against Palace, a side that had defeated Liverpool three times this season, Alexander Isak broke the deadlock before Andy Robertson extended the lead. Daniel Munoz reduced the deficit in contentious circumstances before Florian Wirtz wrapped up the three points in added time. This victory alleviates some of the pressure on manager Slot, but owners Fenway Sports Group have taken decisive action with one of their other franchises. Express Sport brings you the latest from Anfield...

FSG dismiss staff

FSG have opted to make a change with the Boston Red Sox, the baseball franchise they own, and have dismissed team manager Alex Cora from his position. Alongside Cora, five members of his coaching staff have also been released.

This follows a disappointing start to the campaign, during which the team have only managed 10 victories while suffering 17 defeats.

In a statement, FSG chief and Liverpool FC principal owner John Henry said: "Alex Cora led this organisation to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude.

"He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.

"I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organisation. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude."

Reds legend Steven Gerrard could be set to secure another managerial position at Burnley. According to the Burnley Express, the 45-year-old is being lined up for the role at Turf Moor.

Burnley will compete in the Championship next season, and reports suggest that manager Scott Parker may soon lose his job. This would leave the position available for Gerrard.

Gerrard is understood to be under consideration should Parker leave. He most recently managed Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq, departing in January 2025, and is open to a return to the touchline after a break.

Mohamed Salah injury update

Mohamed Salah was forced off in the second half against Palace after going down clutching his left leg. With the Egyptian widely expected to depart the club at the end of the season, fears are now growing that he may have pulled on a Liverpool shirt for the final time.

Egypt's national team director Ibrahim Hassan appears to have confirmed as much, telling Reuters: "He has suffered a hamstring tear and will require four weeks of treatment."

Slot admitted to Match of the Day following the victory over Palace: "It's too early to say but we all know Mo and how hard it is for him to leave the pitch. For Mo to leave the pitch, it shows you something but we have to wait and see how bad it is."
