My sympathy for Sharon Osbourne has run out - Ozzy's death doesn't excuse latest move

I used to like Sharon Osbourne. When she was nothing more to me than a judge on ITV talent show X Factor and a familiar face from reality show The Osbournes, I thought she was fun, feisty and could stand up for herself against Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. Decades later, though, she's transformed into something completely unrecognisable.

Let me be clear - Sharon joining Tommy Robinson in his far-right Unite the Kingdom march is nothing but the final straw. Yes, Sharon has faced a horrendous few months after the death of her beloved rock star husband Ozzy, but she has been leaning further and further towards the far right for years before this.

In 2021, Sharon left her US chat show The Talk after a controversial debate about racism, in which she was accused of "giving validation to racist views".

She said of her friendship with Piers Morgan: "I feel like I'm about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend who many people think is racist, so that makes me a racist." She challenged her Black co-star Sheryl Underwood to explain a time Piers had "said racist things".

Later, rather than apologising, Sharon claimed she had been made the "sacrificial lamb" by the network.

She was also accused of using racist language towards her co-star Julie Chen, who is Chinese-American.

This is all to say, it shouldn't surprise anyone that Sharon is being even louder about her political views after Ozzy's passing. She may think she has nothing to lose, she may think she's entitled to her views in her old age. But this kind of talk is damaging - and throwing her lot in with the likes of Tommy Robinson, who has been in and out of prison for various offences over the years, is a supremely idiotic move.

I'm done making excuses for Sharon - this has gone on too long.
