To promote environmental protection in the capital, the Delhi government has intensified preparations to start a large-scale tree plantation campaign with the participation of every section of the society. Under this initiative, a high level meeting was organized under the chairmanship of Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in which representatives of more than 20 educational institutions participated. In this meeting, along with schools, colleges, universities and technical institutes, many prominent institutions were involved, among which prestigious institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Netaji Subhash Technological University and Jamia Millia Islamia were prominent.

Senior officials of Education Department, Forest and Environment Department and civic agencies were also present in the meeting. Everyone together discussed coordination and action plan to make the campaign successful. The aim of the government through this campaign is to increase the green cover in Delhi, strengthen the environmental balance and connect the youth with environmental protection. Under this scheme, a target has been set to plant more than 70 lakh trees, plants and bushes in Delhi with the coordinated efforts of 22 departments.

Important role of educational institutions

Addressing the meeting, Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that educational institutions will have to become the “backbone” of Delhi’s green movement. He stressed that students, teachers and administrative staff should be actively involved not only in planting saplings but also in their long-term care. Many leading educational institutions including Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Netaji Subhash Technological University and Jamia Millia Islamia are participating in this campaign. Sirsa said that the government is identifying more than 8 lakh people from different sections of the society, who will be motivated to plant trees in the name of ‘Mother’ and ‘Mother Nature’. Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the vision of the government is clear to make every citizen of Delhi a partner for clean air and green environment.

MCD, NDMC and DDA will plant saplings with Forest Department

Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that under this campaign, all the necessary plants will be made available completely free of cost by the Forest Department and the Horticulture Wing of MCD, NDMC and DDA. Educational institutions have been instructed to identify available spaces on their campuses. Besides, they will have to provide detailed information about the species of plants, required number and the number of plants to be planted in the initial phase to the government. Major institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Netaji Subhash Technological University and Jamia Millia Islamia are involved in this campaign. According to the plan, the horticulture wing of all the 13 zones of Delhi, concerned senior officials and local public representatives will themselves monitor the plantation work and ensure regular care of the plants. The government has decided that the plantation activities will be started during the monsoon in the first fortnight of July 2026, so that the plants can grow better and have higher chances of survival.

Delhi government will also start Green Awards

Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the aim of the government is not limited to just planting trees, but to make every school, college and university campus a living example of environmental responsibility. The minister said that the trees planted in educational institutions will not only improve the air quality but also improve the local micro-climate. Also, it will help in increasing environmental awareness among students in everyday life. Major institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Netaji Subhash Technological University and Jamia Millia Islamia are also involved in this campaign.

Launch of “Green Awards”

The government is now going to launch “Green Awards”, under which those individuals and institutions will be honored who will take best care of the planted trees and ensure their long-term survival. Manjinder Singh Sirsa clarified that the government will not only look at how many saplings were planted, but also how effectively they were looked after. He said that through “Green School Awards” those institutions will be honored which will fulfill the real responsibility of environmental protection. According to officials, under this, real-time monitoring of the entire process will be done through the ‘Green Drive 2026-27’ portal.

Every plant will be geo-fenced

Complete details of plantation, participation of institutions and progress will be uploaded regularly on this portal. Its objective is to ensure transparency and accountability. Under the new system, geo-fencing of each planted plant will be done, which will make its real-time tracking possible. This will ensure that the condition and growth of the plants can be monitored over a long period of time. Regional officials, civic agencies and forest department officials will coordinate directly with the educational institutions. This will ensure supply of plants, technical support and smooth operation of the entire campaign. The government believes that the use of digital technology will not only make the plantation drive more effective, but its long-term success and environmental impact will also be better measured.

Transformative change may come in Delhi

The minister said the government’s aim is not just to develop green campuses, but to create a sustainable green future for the entire city. He believes that this initiative will take Delhi towards a cleaner and more balanced environment. Leading institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Netaji Subhash Technological University and Jamia Millia Islamia are actively participating in this campaign. The government believes that incorporating environmental activities within educational campuses will strengthen long-term environmental awareness among students and staff. Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that this initiative will make the institutions active partners in the mission of clean air, green lifestyle and sustainable urban development.
