CLEVELAND (AP) - Travis Bazzana made his highly anticipated major league debut with the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night, showcasing his skills during a close game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 23-year-old, selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 amateur draft, went 0 for 2 with two walks in a game that ended in a 1-0 loss for the Guardians. Call-Up Announcement Bazzana learned of his call-up from Triple-A Columbus after their doubleheader against Buffalo on Sunday. The official announcement came on Tuesday when Juan Brito was optioned back to Columbus. Debut Experience Initially nervous, Bazzana quickly settled into the game after his first at-bat and fielding a ground ball. He expressed, "You have this kind of antsy and high heart rate feeling. But after that, it felt like a normal baseball game and felt locked in." He played second base and batted seventh in the lineup. Prospect Background As the top prospect in the Guardians' organization, Bazzana excelled at Columbus, posting a .287 batting average with two home runs, ten RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 24 games. Notably, he reached base safely in his last 13 games prior to his promotion. Family Support His parents, Gary and Jenny, had planned their trip to the United States and arrived just in time to witness their son's debut. Bazzana shared, "My mom was smiling and crying at the same time. Very excited, very emotional, and my dad was shocked and just very excited." Notable Achievements Bazzana became the 14th player from the 2024 draft class to reach the majors, marking him as the ninth position player and the seventh top-10 pick from that class. This group also includes notable players such as 2025 AL Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz and Kansas City's Jac Caglianone. Cultural Significance In a nod to his Australian roots, Bazzana chose Men at Work's 1981 hit "Down Under" as his walk-up song. He stated, "I just had this inkling the last couple of months that I felt like that would be special to start my career." Guardians' Performance The Guardians have struggled recently, losing four straight games and six of their last eight, currently holding the fifth-worst batting average in the majors at .227. They have been shut out four times this season, including two 1-0 losses. Manager's Insight Guardians manager Stephen Vogt commented on Bazzana's potential, saying, "I think with the way he was swinging the bat in Triple-A and with the need on the team, we kind of need a little jolt. This is a hitter with power, can hit the ball to all fields, great base runner and can play some second base." Injury Setback Bazzana faced challenges last season, missing two months due to an oblique strain. He had a .239 batting average with nine home runs, 39 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases across Double-A Akron and Columbus. He noted that his time in Triple-A helped build his confidence heading into this season. Looking Ahead Reflecting on his journey, Bazzana said, "I mean, I would've hoped by 2026 I was able to impact this team kind of when I got drafted. So it's good to be here now and a couple bumps, but I'm feeling really strong and in a perfect place to join and really help the team win." He felt well-prepared after a successful spring training and participation in the World Baseball Classic. Global Reach of the Game The Guardians' game aired on ESPN2 in Australia and other Pacific Rim countries, highlighting the growing global interest in baseball. Vogt remarked, "Our game's really growing globally and just the opportunities that people have from all over the world to come play this beautiful game."
