Mullanpur:Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer termed his side’s first defeat of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season as a “learning experience” after Rajasthan Royals (RR) ended their unbeaten run with a six-wicket win at Mullanpur on Tuesday night.
Despite posting a formidable total, PBKS were unable to defend it as RR chased down the target with four balls to spare, riding on impressive batting performances across the order.
Iyer remains positive despite setback
Speaking after the match, Iyer emphasised that the loss should not overshadow the team’s strong performances so far in the tournament. PBKS have been dominant throughout the season, excelling in both chasing and defending high totals.
“This is our first loss of the season, so it definitely teaches you a lot,” Iyer said. “We have chased 200-plus totals and defended them as well. This is just one of those games where things didn’t go our way.”
He added that dwelling on missed opportunities would not benefit the team and stressed the importance of maintaining a positive and optimistic outlook going forward.
“I just want to stay positive and be optimistic in our approach,” he noted.
Strong batting display by Punjab Kings
Batting first after being put in, PBKS posted an imposing 222/4 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a blistering unbeaten knock from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 62 off just 22 balls, including four boundaries and six sixes.
Prabhsimran Singh also played a crucial role, contributing 59 runs off 44 deliveries, with six fours and a six. Their efforts ensured PBKS had what appeared to be a match-winning total on a pitch that was described as slightly slow and tacky.
Iyer lauded his batters for adapting well to the conditions and delivering an exceptional performance.
“I thought 224 on the board was a brilliant score, especially on this wicket,” he said. “The batsmen were exceptional in the way they went about their innings.”
Rajasthan Royals chase led by collective effort
In response, RR got off to a flying start with a 51-run opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Jaiswal scored a fluent 51 off 27 balls, while Sooryavanshi added a quickfire 43 off just 16 deliveries.
The chase was further stabilised and eventually sealed by a crucial unbeaten partnership of 77 runs for the fifth wicket between Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey. Ferreira remained not out on 52 from 26 balls, while Dubey chipped in with a brisk 31 off 12 deliveries.
Their late surge ensured RR crossed the finish line comfortably, handing PBKS their first defeat of the season.
Bowling execution proves costly
While praising his team’s batting effort, Iyer acknowledged that the bowlers failed to execute their plans effectively. He pointed out that PBKS had intended to rely on variations such as slower deliveries and yorkers but fell short in implementation.
“I think we fell a bit short in our bowling, in terms of execution,” Iyer admitted. “We had plans, but we couldn’t execute them properly.”
He also credited RR’s middle-order resilience, particularly the partnership between Ferreira and Dubey, which turned the game decisively in RR’s favour.
Challenges of modern T20 cricket
Reflecting on the nature of T20 cricket, Iyer highlighted the increasing challenges faced by bowlers in the format. With batters adopting aggressive approaches from the outset, executing plans has become more crucial than ever.
“In this format, players go hard from ball one. It’s an arduous task for bowlers,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about execution. If you execute your plans well, you come out on top.”
Points table remains tight
Despite the loss, PBKS continue to lead the IPL 2026 standings with 13 points, having registered six wins along with one no result. RR, on the other hand, climbed to third place with 12 points from six wins and three defeats.
The result adds further excitement to the tournament as teams jostle for positions in the business end of the league stage.
Conclusion
While the defeat marked the end of PBKS’s unbeaten streak, Iyer’s composed response reflects a team focused on long-term consistency rather than short-term setbacks. With a strong record already in place, PBKS will look to quickly regroup and return to winning ways, using this loss as a valuable lesson in execution and adaptability.
