Anyone with a Kindle e-reader might want to check whether their device is eligible for an upgrade. Amazon has just confirmed that it is rolling out a big software boost to a duo of devices, which will add a slew of new features for free. The changes will affect those using the more premium Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which both feature more immersive colour displays.
So, what's new? The first upgrade will add a system-wide Dark Mode to devices, enabling users to switch surfaces like Home, Library, and Settings to either Light Mode or Dark Mode for the first time. It's a bit like what millions already use on Android and iPhones, with these call makers long having the option to make the overall system appear white or black.
Kindle readers will also be able to switch the background of supported reading content, including books and PDFs, between Light and Dark Mode depending on their preference.
On Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which features a pen for jotting notes, the Notebook is also getting an update. This lets users control things separately, so there are different page themes for Notebooks than for books and PDFs.
Customers can also choose to have their system theme differ from their page theme. For example, they can set Dark Mode for Home, Library, and Settings while keeping notebooks in Light Mode to create a visual experience that works best for them.
Once available, this feature can be used by going to Quick Actions (swipe down from the top of the screen) > Dark Mode. It's here, it can be switched on or off.
Dark Mode looks like a nice change, but that's not all.
In addition, a new, recently released feature in Kindle Scribe notebooks also enables customers to add structured lines, arrows, circles, triangles and rectangles directly from the toolbar, making it faster and easier to create clean, polished notes.
With hold-to-snap, customers can draw freehand and automatically convert strokes into precise lines, circles, triangles, or rectangles, combining the flexibility of handwriting with the neatness of structured tools.
There's no word when these changes will arrive on UK kindles, but Amazon has confirmed that they are rolling out now.
News of this update comes as Amazon has just announced the release of the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in the UK.
Those treating themselves to one of these new ultra-thin and light devices will get a colourful 11-inch display with texture-moulded glass.
The idea behind this is to give the feel of writing on paper when using the pen. It also gets a backlight for when the lights get low and there's a better processor inside for faster page turns and improved overall performance.
Amazon is also promising weeks of battery life despite that new colour screen. The only sticking point of this device is its £569.99 price.
