On Wednesday, the political temperature in West Bengal soared to new heights during the second and decisive phase of the 2026 assembly elections, marked by a confrontation between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in Bhawanipur. Amid heavy security and rising tensions, Banerjee accused election commission observers of acting like 'terrorists,' while Adhikari claimed that the Chief Minister was panicking due to the prospect of her defeat.
Allegations of Intimidation
Earlier, Mamata alleged that central forces were forcibly entering the homes of her party members to intimidate voters. She made these remarks while visiting TMC councillor Asim Bose in Kolkata, claiming that central forces had invaded Bose's residence late last night, prompting her visit this morning.
Mamata's Strong Statements
Running for election in the Bhawanipur constituency, Mamata stated, "Look at how our worker was beaten last night. Witness this injustice. What kind of hooliganism is this? Voting is not conducted this way. It is a festival of democracy, but they have completely ruined it. Their intention is clear: the BJP wants to rig the elections by force. Our workers and people are ready to sacrifice, but they will not back down."
Suvendu's Counterclaims
In response to Mamata's accusations, Suvendu claimed she was associating with 'goons' and attempting to intimidate voters. He further alleged that Hindu voters were being threatened during the voting process in Bhawanipur.
Focus on Bhawanipur
All eyes are on Bhawanipur, where voting is currently taking place. In 2021, Mamata challenged Suvendu in his stronghold of Nandigram, where the BJP leader narrowly defeated her. In 2026, Suvendu has turned the tables by contesting against Mamata in her stronghold of Bhawanipur, aiming to unseat her. Breaking from her usual routine of voting in the afternoon at Mitra Institution, Banerjee left her Kalighat residence before 8 AM and visited several polling stations in her constituency, including booths in the Chetla area of South Kolkata.
Allegations of Voting Irregularities
Later, Banerjee sat outside a polling station in Bhawanipur's Chakberia, alleging irregularities in the voting process. She accused the BJP of attempting to influence voting through central forces and observers. "Many observers have come from outside and are working at the behest of the BJP. People need to cast their votes—can voting happen this way?" she questioned, also claiming that all TMC flags had been removed and that outsiders were interfering in the voting.
Call for Intervention
Banerjee added, "They are not allowing the councillor of Ward No. 70 to come out. They are taking away all our boys. Abhishek and I stayed awake all night." She alleged that some individuals from outside the state were trying to create unrest in the constituency and called for immediate intervention from the election commission.
BJP's Rebuttal
The BJP dismissed these allegations, stating that the ruling party was trying to create confusion due to public anger against them. TMC's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, after casting his vote at Mitra Institution, accused election observers of misconduct at various locations. He expressed confidence that TMC would win more seats than in 2021, telling reporters, "But these matters won't matter; we will win even more seats in this election."
Suvendu's Predictions
Meanwhile, Suvendu predicted that the Chief Minister would lose the election. The BJP leader performed rituals at two temples in the Khidirpur area of the constituency and noted that a large number of voters were coming out to cast their votes, asserting that the election commission had made adequate arrangements for a fair and free election. Referring to Banerjee's early departure, he told reporters, "It doesn't matter; she will lose."
Significance of This Election Phase
The results of this phase are considered crucial, as it includes South Bengal, traditionally viewed as TMC's stronghold, where the BJP hopes to gain a significant advantage. Bhawanipur remained the center of discussion throughout the day; on one hand, Banerjee demanded action from the election commission citing interference in the elections, while on the other, the BJP dismissed her claims, with Suvendu asserting that she would face defeat.
