The show was whittled down to a final four of Kat, Kaleb, Lauren and Nick. At that stage, Kaleb held the role of secret millionaire for the second time, after the money had found its way back to him following its random reassignment when Umeko was caught out holding the cash in episode 6.

Kaleb was buoyant about his prospects having avoided suspicion during the penultimate challenge of Killer Croquet in episode 7. Meanwhile, Kat received the final clue revealing that the millionaire had previously owned a clothing store and had a passion for fashion.

She incorrectly assumed it was intended for Daisy and had her voted off at the final elimination dinner, meaning she missed out on a place in the final. They also failed to identify the millionaire, resulting in a killer shot being used to eliminate Kevin as well.

The following day, the final four were set a challenge that pitted them against one another in pairs. Kaleb and Kat faced off against Lauren and Nick.

One contestant assembled a puzzle in the pool, while the other solved clues about former participants to locate the correct pieces. Lauren and Nick emerged victorious, but rather than receiving a clue about the millionaire, on this occasion they were able to choose one person from the opposing team to send home.

The pair struggled to determine whether they should retain who they believed to be the millionaire, or eliminate them in the hope the money would transfer and they could begin afresh. They ultimately chose Kat, who revealed an empty box to the surprise of almost everyone.

Host Peter Serafinowicz announced that the final task to crown the ultimate winner would first require them to examine an assortment of items in a box.

They would then have a limited amount of time to recall as many items as possible. The millionaire would receive a head start advantage, meaning they had to be cautious not to score too highly and betray their identity.

Ultimately, Lauren finished third, Kaleb came second and Nick placed first. This meant that only Kaleb and Nick had the opportunity to swap boxes should they wish to do so. Lauren was given the opportunity to discuss the options with the other contestants and potentially sway their decision. Yet, she curiously chose to neither answer questions nor pose any of her own.

Kaleb, convinced this tactic made Lauren appear suspicious, kept his box containing the money firmly in place. He even attempted one final mind game with Nick before he headed in to make his decision.

Viewers didn't witness Nick making his choice, though he revealed he followed his instincts. In the dramatic final reveal, it emerged that Nick ultimately decided to swap the boxes, seizing the money at the very last moment to claim victory and become the show's latest millionaire.

Asked how he felt, he said: "I'm at a loss of words, I love you guys both. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. It's nuts bro, I can't believe your boy pulled that off."

Gracious in defeat, Kaleb told the camera: "He got me. I got whooped. I got beat. I just lost one million dollars. I feel disappointed but I played this game well, and I know I did. I am going back to a loving wife, two amazing children. I'm gonna ride that old broken down tractor and I'm gonna sell houses in a town of less than 300 people, and I'm still just gonna be Kaleb. And I'm OK with that."

Lauren added: "I didn't win but I go home to my family, to my dogs, to my bed, and I played a game that I can be proud of. That's enough for me. I hope Handsome Nick spends it wisely and doesn't blow it on hair gel and Crest Whitestrips. And maybe if I'm lucky he'll buy me a car." Yet it was host Serafinowicz who delivered the final blow, claiming he had one last revelation up his sleeve. He quipped: "Nick was lying to you about something else. He's not actually handsome."

Million Dollar Secret is streaming on Netflix.
