The second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections has taken a dramatic turn following serious allegations of electoral malpractice. Reports emerged from several polling stations claiming that adhesive tape was found covering specific buttons on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), sparking an immediate reaction from the Election Commission.
Election Commission Vows Strict Action: Re-Polling Possible
Addressing the growing concerns, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal has taken a tough stance. He officially announced that if the allegations of tape being found on EVM buttons are proven true after investigation, the Commission will not hesitate to order re-polling in the affected booths.
This move aims to maintain the sanctity of the democratic process, ensuring that every voter can cast their vote for their preferred candidate without any physical obstruction or confusion.
Diamond Harbour Under the Scanner
The controversy gained momentum in Falta, a key area under the high-profile Diamond Harbour constituency. Voters and polling agents reported irregularities, claiming that certain buttons on the machines were intentionally tampered with or obstructed by tape to mislead voters or prevent them from selecting specific candidates.
High Voter Turnout Amidst Tensions
Despite these reports of irregularities, the second phase of the Bengal elections saw a massive surge in voter participation. Since early morning, long queues were visible at almost all polling booths as citizens turned out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. Security has been beefed up across sensitive zones to prevent any further clashes or technical tampering.
What Happens Next?
The Election Commission is currently reviewing the complaints and technical reports from the polling observers. If the physical tampering is verified, a formal announcement regarding the dates for re-polling in those specific locations is expected shortly.
