Driving Tips: For better mileage and smooth driving of the car, it is very important for the drivers to first understand the technical aspects to it. One of these is RPM, which has a direct impact on both the performance and mileage of the car engine. Driving in the right gear and at the right RPM will go a long way in maintaining both your car’s performance and fuel efficiency.
What is RPM?
The full name of RPM is “Revolutions Per Minute”, i.e. how many times the engine is rotating in one minute. This information is shown on a tachometer located along with the speedometer in the car’s instrument cluster, which usually has numbers ranging from 0 to 8 or 10.
How does RPM work?
There are many important parts in a car engine, the main one being the crankshaft. When you start the car, all the parts of the engine start working together. The number of times the crankshaft rotates in a minute is called RPM and is visible in the meter.
Effect on vehicle performance
When you press the accelerator, the RPM increases and the speed of the vehicle also increases. At low speed the RPM remains low, while at high speed it increases. Driving at the correct RPM makes the engine work smoother and performance remains better.
Effect of RPM on mileage
RPM has a direct impact on the mileage of the car. Driving at low RPM puts less load on the engine, which reduces fuel consumption and gives better mileage. At the same time, at higher RPM the engine has to work harder, which increases fuel consumption and reduces mileage.
