Recent torrential rains and hailstorms in Bengaluru have wreaked havoc across the city, leading to significant disruption of daily life. This natural disaster has resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives, including that of a young child, due to incidents such as wall collapses and electrocutions. The heavy rainfall caused critical buildings, including the Vidhana Soudha, to be submerged in water, while fallen trees obstructed traffic and power supply in numerous areas. In response, the government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased, highlighting once again the vulnerabilities in the city's infrastructure and drainage systems.

Rescue Operations Underway

A compound wall of a neighboring building near a hospital collapsed, falling on vendors and pedestrians seeking shelter from the rain. Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene to initiate recovery efforts, while officials began investigating the cause of the wall's collapse.

Government Response and Compensation

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the disaster site and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for the families of the victims. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also visited and confirmed that the rain-related incidents had resulted in eight fatalities across the city, including one at Vega City Mall.

Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the loss of life and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. He described the incident as 'unfortunate' and extended his condolences to the grieving families.

Additional Casualties Reported

In another rain-related incident, a man aged approximately 30-35 died after coming into contact with an electric pole in the mini forest area near 15th Cross, under the jurisdiction of JP Nagar police station. Officials from the Karnataka Electricity Board arrived at the site, and the JP Nagar police conducted an investigation.

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure

The sudden downpour provided relief from the intense heat but severely disrupted life across the city. Areas such as Richmond Town and Shantinagar experienced flooding, with water reaching waist-deep levels, while traffic on major roads slowed to a crawl. Government offices, including parts of Vidhana Soudha, were also inundated.

Fallen Trees and Infrastructure Concerns

Officials reported that trees were uprooted in several neighborhoods, including Malleshwaram, Shantinagar, and Sheshadripuram. The Greater Bengaluru Authority indicated that around 50 trees had fallen, prompting the deployment of fire and emergency personnel to clear roads and manage traffic.

Political Reactions and Investigations

Political leaders expressed concern over the state of the aging infrastructure. Opposition leaders called for a judicial inquiry, alleging that the old wall had not been properly maintained. The state government has announced an investigation into the incident and promised strict action against those found responsible.

Preventive Measures Underway

Meanwhile, civic authorities have begun reassessing flood-prone areas and old buildings throughout Bengaluru to prevent further accidents.
