AEPS stands for Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, and this scam is perpetrated by exploiting the Aadhaar system. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre shared this information through a post on X. According to I4C, this scam uses the target's photo and AI, and the account is emptied without access to any card or OTP. It’s worth noting that AEPS, or Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, is a payment service developed by the NPCI. Transactions can be made through it without a debit card, PIN, or OTP. All that's needed is your Aadhaar card and face. Online fraudsters exploit this system using technologies like AI and deepfake to perpetrate the scam.

How is the AEPS scam carried out?
To carry out this scam, fraudsters use the target's Aadhaar number. Furthermore, a deepfake video is created using AI, using the target's photo from online sources such as social media. The video and Aadhaar number are then used to empty the target's bank account. This entire scam doesn't require the target to provide an OTP or card number. Consequently, the victim has no chance of escape.
How to avoid AEPS scam?
There are some important steps you can take to avoid AEPS scams.
- First, lock your biometrics. This can be done easily in the Aadhaar app, preventing online fraudsters from verifying your biometrics while withdrawing money through AEPS.
- Also, use digital methods to share your Aadhaar. Giving photocopies of your Aadhaar card to different locations increases the risk of this type of fraud.
- Keep notifications of banking apps on and also keep checking banking notifications coming on SMS etc.
- In the AEPS scam, fraudsters use your social media photos to create deepfake videos, so keep your profile locked on all social media platforms.
