With May just a day away, many Brits will be looking forward to longer, sunnier days; however, the weather seems to have other plans. Winter is set to make a dramatic return in just over a week, with snow forecast and temperatures expected to fall below freezing.
WXCHARTS weather maps have turned purple and white indicating that snow is on its way. A cold spell is expected to move across the country on Friday, May 8, with temperatures forecast to fall below the seasonal average for May nationwide. Scotland looks set to see the brunt of the snowy weather, with large swathes of the country predicted to be buried in snow blizzards.
At 6am on May 8 millions in Scotland will draw back their curtains and uncover snow. Parts of the Scottish Highlands will see 1mm of snow fall and snow depths could hit 5cm. Argyll and Bute could see up to 0.55mm of snow.
Fast forward six hours to 12pm, and those in northern and central areas are expected to see significant snowfall, with the heaviest accumulations likely over higher ground.
The snow will have moved to cover almost the entirety of the Scottish Highlands and will be covered in snow with a possible 3mm forecast.
Snow depths in Argyll and Bute could hit 3mm. Perth and Kinross as well as Stirling will have the coldest temperatures in the UK, with the mercury to slump to a miserable -1C.
The Scottish Highlands will see the mercury hover between 0C and 2C. Most of the UK is not expected to see snow, but temperatures will remain in the single digits, marking a clear shift from the current sunny weather.
The North West will see lows of 3C whilst the North East will hover between 4C and 5C. Elsewhere, Kent and Chelmsford will see the highest temperatures although this will only be 7C.
The Met Office long range forecast for May 5 to May 14 reads: "A fairly quiet start to the period looks likely with many areas seeing a good deal of dry weather.
"That said we are unlikely to see a return of the completely dry and warm weather we have see in recent days, with clear or sunny periods and showers more likely.
"Toward the latter part of the period a trend toward more changeable weather is favoured although there should still be some drier intervals.
"Overall temperatures likely close to or a little below average at first, especially in the north, then returning close to average or rather warm later."
