Michael Jackson's biopic has recently hit theatres, leaving fans wondering about his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles.
The late legend had bubbles from 1983 until the early 2000s, with the help of trainer Bob Dunn, who acquired him from a Texas research facility, becoming a consistent companion to the pop singer.
But as Bubbles grew older, his size and strength made it increasingly difficult and unsafe for him to remain in a domestic environment. Eventually, he was relocated to live permanently with Dunn, though Jackson continued to visit him.
Bubble's has been cared for by the Centre for Great Apes, a sanctuary for chimpanzees and orangutans in need of lifetime care, since 2005.
But many people are speculating that, since Michael Jackson's death, no member of the Jackson family has visited Bubbles.
In a statement, Lionsgate commented on Bubbles' appearance in the movie: "Bubbles is portrayed in the movie using CGI technology, and the real Bubbles has been living a peaceful life at the Center for Great Apes sanctuary for more than 20 years."
In an Instagram post, the Centre for Great Apes captioned " We want to address some misinformation that has been circulating online regarding Bubbles and the Center for Great Apes.
While we appreciate the recent interest in Bubbles following the release of the Michael film, we want to clarify that Jaafar Jackson has not visited the Center for Great Apes or Bubbles. We would certainly welcome the opportunity to host him for a visit in the future."
They continued: "We also want to note that photos currently circulating online that appear to show visits or interactions with Bubbles are AI-generated and are not authentic."
Users commented on the work of the sanctuary, praising their efforts to keep Bubbles looked after.
One user commented: " Thank you for this post and thank you for giving Bubbles all the love and care since 2005. I hope no one will bother Bubbles because it is beyond disgusting to take advantage of his fame.
I have always loved and followed Bubbles' journey from afar, and I will continue to wish him the best. Everyone else can stay away from the baby (I know he's 42, still a baby "
Whilst another added: " Thanks, I've been putting the record straight when I can on SM that the pictures are AI, but unfortunately, not everyone can think for themselves. Thank you for all you do for ALL the apes."
