Vodafone Idea
Vodafone Idea (Vi), a telecom company burdened with heavy debt, has got another big relief from the government. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made a huge reduction in the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues of the company. Actually, there was a legal tussle going on between the government and telecom companies regarding the calculation of AGR for a long time. Telecom operators argued that the government's way of calculating AGR is not correct, because license fees and other liabilities are decided on this basis.
In this case, following the instructions of the Supreme Court, a special committee looked into VI's petitions. According to the information given to the stock market on Thursday, the total AGR dues of Vi till December 31, 2025 have now been fixed at Rs 64,046 crore. This figure is no less than a big win for the company, because the earlier estimated outstanding was around Rs 87,695 crore. That means the financial burden of more than Rs 23 thousand crore has been directly reduced.
got a long time to repay
Along with reducing the amount of dues, the Department of Telecommunications has also made the conditions for repaying it very easy. The company does not have to pay this huge amount immediately. Under the new arrangement, Vi will have to pay at least Rs 100 crore every year for the next four years from financial year 2031-32 (FY32). After this, whatever amount is left can be repaid in six equal annual installments between the financial years 2035-36 to 2040-41 (FY41). The biggest benefit of this decision is that the mountain of immediate payment of Rs 16,400 crore which was standing before the company in March 2026, has now been avoided. Earlier in December also, the government had imposed a partial moratorium on the dues and postponed the payments till 2030, so that the company would have cash flow for daily operations.
Jio and Airtel will face tough competition?
Even though Vi shares closed at Rs 10.22 on BSE on Thursday with a slight decline (0.68%), but this government relief is very important for the future of the company. At present, Vi has a total debt of about Rs 2 lakh crore, which also includes statutory dues. However, this latest reduction in AGR dues will give some breathing room to the company's balance sheet. Trust in the company will be strengthened in the market, which will make it easier to raise funds from the market from new investors. The company will be able to use this new money to improve its network, so that it can compete with big companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
Government became the 'savior' of the company in every difficult time.
This is not the first time that the government has bailed out Vodafone Idea from trouble. The government has been continuously interfering in the telecom sector to maintain competition and prevent monopoly. Under the telecom relief package of 2021, the government had converted a part of Vi's dues into shares (equity), making it the largest shareholder with 48.99% stake. After this, in February 2023, interest worth about Rs 16,000 crore was converted into equity, taking the government's stake to about 33%. Recently, even in April 2025, spectrum auction dues worth Rs 36,950 crore were converted into shares.
