Yogadhyan Badri temple has a statue of Lord Vishnu in yoga posture. Apart from this, there is also a Vasudev temple in this village, which is believed to have been established by the five Pandavas together. There are some special stories to these two temples, knowing which you will understand why King Pandu and his sons built the temple here.
Pandukeshwar village is in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. According to mythological stories, King Pandu’s five sons Yudhishthir, Bhima, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev were born here. Along with this, an interesting thing is that Pandavas spent the last part of their life here and attained salvation. Now the question arises that why did King Pandu build a temple at this place, and also why did the Pandavas come to live in this village.
Why did King Pandu build Yogdhyan Badri Temple?
According to mythology, a sage was sitting in a forest in the form of a deer, whom King Pandu thought to be a deer and killed him with his arrow. After this the sage cursed Pandu that he could not love any woman, and as soon as the feeling of love for any woman would arise in his mind, he would die at that very moment.
To escape this curse, King Pandu went to live in a village in Uttarakhand. At this place he worshiped Lord Vishnu in Yogdhyan Badri temple. His five sons were born here. Madri was bathing in the Alaknanda river near Pandukeshwar village. Then they saw Pandu and both became fascinated after seeing each other. King Pandu died at that very moment due to the curse.
Pandukeshwar association of Pandavas
According to religious legends, when the Pandavas were spending 12 years in exile, they came here to perform the last rites of their father after his death. According to the legend, Arjuna was absorbed in meditation in this village, seeing which Lord Indra was pleased and blessed Arjuna. After this the Pandavas established the Vasudev Temple, where Lord Vishnu, Madri and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped.
According to religious beliefs, after the Mahabharata war, when the five brothers killed their brother Karna, to get rid of this sin, they started living in Pandukeshwar village. He used to visit Vasudev Temple and Yogdhyan Badri Temple every day. It was here that the five Pandavas died and attained heaven.
