A social media experiment comparing blood test reports from three diagnostic labs has sparked fresh discussion on the reliability of medical testing and the importance of choosing certified laboratories.
The issue came into focus after influencer Ayesha Raje Goyal shared that she got her mother’s thyroid levels tested at three different labs within two hours, only to receive noticeably different results.
Three labs, three reports
According to the video, values for TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and anti-TPO showed varying readings across the three labs.
While some differences were small, others were significant enough to surprise viewers and raise concerns over how patients interpret health reports.
Why results can differ
Medical experts say minor variations between labs are possible and do not always indicate errors.
Different laboratories may use different machines, reagents, calibration systems and testing platforms. Even antibody methods used in thyroid testing can vary between manufacturers.
Experts also note that hormone levels can fluctuate naturally during the day.
Medicines and supplements matter
Doctors say certain supplements, especially biotin, may interfere with thyroid tests and cause misleading results.
Other medications such as steroids, dopamine- drugs and amiodarone may also affect readings.
Patients are advised to inform doctors and labs about medicines or supplements they are taking before tests.
Why certified labs matter
The discussion has also highlighted the importance of using NABL-certified laboratories, which follow recognised quality and calibration standards.
Health experts recommend using the same trusted lab for repeat monitoring whenever possible, as trends over time are often more useful than isolated reports.
What patients should do
Doctors advise against self-diagnosing based on a single report. Test results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and clinical examination.
When in doubt, consult a qualified doctor rather than panic over numbers alone.
