King Charles and Queen Camilla have thanked the American people for the "warmth of your welcome and the kind support" during their four day state visit to the US. Alongside the sweet message, shared on their social media pages, Buckingham Palace has shared a new portrait of the couple taken during their trip.

The smiling couple look lovingly at each other as they pose for the photograph, taken in the Jackson Place sitting room at Blair House, the guest house adjacent to the White House where they stayed for the duration of ther visit. Charles and Camilla, who is wearing the pistachio green crepe silk dress by Fiona Clare with a matching hat that she wore for the ceremonial welcome at the US leader's official residence on Tuesday morning, stand with their arms around each other, beaming.

Behind the could is a colourful mural of the Washington skyline by Robert Jackson.

The portrait was taken on the first full day of their US tour by royal photographer Chris Jackson.

The message accompanying the picture, said: "Farewell and thank you for the warmth of your welcome and the kind support you gave us throughout our first visit to the US as King and Queen, in this, your special anniversary year.

"We leave a piece of our [red heart emoji] behind and take a little of yours back home with us. Until the next time... God Bless America." It was signed off Charles R and Camilla R.

A second image of the New York skyline accompanies the message and shows one skyscraper lit up in the union flag, a second in red, white and blue and the Statue of Liberty in the centre.

The photo was shared just hours after the King and Queen concluded their historic state visit to the US.

They wrapped up the final day by bidding farewell to the President and First Lady at the White House and undertaking several engagements in Virginia, including attending a block party attended by thousands of flag-waving well-wishers.

Charles then flew to Bermuda for the start of a royal visit, while Camilla headed back home to the UK.
