Two princesses have been targeted by a suspected far-right extremist who reportedly planned to harm them. The extremist, who is in custody, was arrested after he was believed to have been plotting to kill Dutch princesses Princess Catharina-Amalia, 22, the heir apparent to the Dutch throne, and her sister Princess Alexia, 20, earlier this year.

The suspect was allegedly found with two axes. These axes had words engraved, including "Alexia", "Mossad", which is Israel's intelligence agency, and the Nazi salute "Sieg Heil".

The unnamed 33-year-old suspect also reportedly had a handwritten note with the words "Amalia", "Alexia" and "bloodbath" written on it.

The suspect is set to appear at a preliminary court hearing on Monday morning.

As reported by The Telegraph, a later court date in The Hague will then be set.

It is not known what the suspect's motive was and why he wanted to target King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Queen Máxima's two oldest daughters.

The incident has probably alarmed the princesses, with Princess Catharina-Amalia having faced safety concerns before.

This included in 2022, when she was forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam after concerns for her safety.

This is believed to have had an impact on the princess, with her mother Queen Máxima saying at the time: "She can't live in Amsterdam and she can't really go outside [the palace]. It has enormous consequences on her life."

The Dutch Royal Family have not commented on this latest case.

They were seen together just days ago as they celebrated King's Day, the day of the King's birthday, last Monday.

The event saw them attend a street party, meet the public and go ice skating.
