Peace lilies are renowned for their luxuriant green foliage and elegant, sail-shaped flowers. When those blooms fail to appear, it is natural to wonder whether you are making an error. More often than not, if your peace lily is not flowering, it is typically due to the absence of one essential element, according to nursery and garden centre @botanicalheaven_.
A gardening expert who frequently posts to the Instagram account emphasised that lighting is the primary reason for these houseplants failing to flower, and proposed a straightforward solution. She said: "My number one recommendation and it's the one that makes the biggest difference, is to move your peace lily to a spot that receives brighter natural light from a window.
"So, no direct sunlight because that can burn its leaves, but just a brighter spot. That is going to make the world 's difference."
Peace lilies are frequently celebrated for their capacity to flourish in low light, which prompts many to position them in dim corners.
Regrettably, while they will endure in shade, this will be at the cost of their blooms. They will not flourish, much less flower.
The first measure to attempt when your peace lily refuses to flower is to relocate it to a fresh position with brighter, yet still indirect, light. Bright indirect light in a north-facing window is the optimal lighting scenario.
It is normal for peace lily blooms to start green, turn white, and then brown, but if your flowers stay green, that's a common sign the plant is getting too much light.
Alongside lighting, the gardening expert highlighted that fertilising can encourage peace lilies to bloom, though only during the growing seasons.
No plant can flourish without adequate nourishment. If your peace lily hasn't received a drop of fertiliser since leaving the garden centre or shop, it simply lacks the resources required to flower.
She said, "Only fertilise them during the growing seasons, which are spring and summer. It's very energetically expensive for a peace lily to produce flowers, so you need to give them all the extra nutrients and light they need to do this."
Feed your peace lily with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertiliser every four to six weeks throughout spring and summer.
Be careful to avoid over-fertilising, as an excess can harm the roots and make the prospect of flowering even more unlikely.
