Health Desk. In today’s time, diabetes has become a rapidly growing health problem. Due to changing lifestyle, wrong eating habits and stress, people of all ages are falling prey to it. In such a situation, it becomes very important to know what should be the normal level of blood sugar according to age and when it becomes a danger signal.
What is blood sugar?
Blood sugar means glucose present in the blood, which works to provide energy to the body. But its level being too high or too low can be harmful in both the cases.
Normal sugar level (fasting and after eating)
Generally the sugar level for a healthy person is considered to be as follows:
Fasting (empty stomach): 70 to 99 mg/dL
2 hours after eating: 100 to 140 mg/dL
Sugar level according to age
The functioning of the body changes with age, so the acceptable range of sugar may also differ slightly:
Children (6–12 years)
Fasting: 80–100 mg/dL
After meals: 100–140 mg/dL
Adolescents and adults (13–59 years)
Fasting: 70–99 mg/dL
After meals: 100–140 mg/dL
Elderly (above 60 years)
Fasting: 80–110 mg/dL
After meals: 110–160 mg/dL
Some relaxation is recommended in the elderly because the body’s insulin response may decrease with age.
When to understand the alarm bells?
Fasting sugar is 126 mg/dL or more, while sugar after meals is 200 mg/dL or more. In such a situation, it is important to immediately consult a doctor for examination and consultation. Having high sugar for a long time can have adverse effects on the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.
