Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt shared a "sad" update with fans live on-air.

The TV presenter, 52, extended his compassion to BBC Gone Fishing Show stars Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse following the heartbreaking death of their dog Ted.

During Saturday's (May 2 ) episode of the beloved BBC cookery show, the TV presenter, 52, welcomed drinks connoisseur Olly Smith, and chefs Vivek Singh and Donna Hay.

Joining them was Lucy Beaumont, who appeared on the programme to talk about her tour. However halfway through the program, Matt took the opportunity to offer his support to Bob and Paul following the death of their beloved pet.

While chatting to Lucy he went on to say: "Paul Whitehouse has text in. You were on his podcast, how was that?" Lucy replied: "It was lovely." She then joked: "It was good talking about all the things that are wrong with you."

Everyone burst out laughing as Matt hit back: "Oh yeah, did you go over time." Donna could be heard shouting: "Rude. So, so rude Matt." Lucy joked: "It did, it did."

The tone of the show shifted as Matt turned his attention to the star's recent loss as he said: "Good morning Paul, if you're watching at home. Also sorry about Ted, that was terrible news."

Olly said: "Yeah, that was sad news." Matt jumped in: "That was so said." Olly continued "Raising a glass to Ted. So sad. Sadly the Dog passed away."

The Patterdale Terrier mix was rescued from a dog's home in Surrey in the Spring of 2013 when he was about six months old. He went to live with Executive Producer of Gone Fishing Lisa Clark and made his first appearance on the popular BBC Two show in Series 3, episode 3. He quickly became a fan favourite and went on to win a series of awards.

Following his death, Ted's owner Lisa said: "Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing.

"He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking jammy dodgers from Bob and bait from Paul. He will be sorely missed both at home and on screen. We'll never forget him. He is survived at home by Bo the Briard."

Bob continued: "So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much.. and away boss."

Meanwhile Paul added: "Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn't a dog, he was a species all of his own. He's gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate."

Saturday Kitchen airs Saturday's from 10am on BBC One and iPlayer
