The Met Gala is being locked down like a war zone this year — here's what they are preparing for

Synopsis

The Met Gala is facing unprecedented security preparations this year, with authorities treating the event as a high-risk gathering due to past protests and global tensions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be surrounded by armed officers, surveillance systems, drones, and restricted zones designed to control access. Officials are also preparing for possible demonstrations linked to geopolitical conflicts and labor-related activism.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is reportedly preparing one of the most extensive security operations in the history of the Met Gala, with measures compared by insiders to a “war zone”-level lockdown. The annual fashion event, popular for attracting global celebrities and political attention, is expected to experience heightened challenges this year due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and past protest activity.

Extreme security measures planned at the Met Gala

According to former NYPD detective Michael Alcazar, speaking to The U.S. Sun, the security structure of the gala is made to prepare for “every eventuality.” Armed police units will patrol in nearby streets, while sniper teams are anticipated to be stationed on surrounding rooftops to supervise activity from above. A tightly controlled perimeter will also be established around Fifth Avenue, with strict entry restrictions in place. Officials are getting ready to enforce a “frozen zone” that could extend up to a mile from the destination.

Protest concerns and rising geopolitical tensions

The Met Gala, which is scheduled to happen on Monday, is viewed as a possible target for protest activity. In recent years, demonstrators have used the event to emphasize issues such as the Gaza conflict, and with ongoing strains involving Iran, officials anticipate potential renewed interruption efforts. The event’s worldwide visibility and high-profile guest list make it a symbolic stage for activism, bringing officials to prepare for organized demonstrations near the venue.

Fake urine protest stunt sparks controversy

Security concerns escalated after SWNS reported that more than 300 bottles of fake urine were found hidden in the museum ahead of the occasion. The action was connected to the UK activist group Everyone Hates Elon, which criticized Amazon’s labor conditions. The group claimed that workers have “reported being forced to urinate in bottles because they are not allowed time to take toilet breaks,” per SWNS. The protest also followed criticism surrounding Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife being selected as honorary co-chairs and primary sponsors of the Met Gala.

Heavy surveillance, drones, and vehicle restrictions

Authorities are expected to deploy drones, extensive CCTV monitoring, and license plate recognition systems to track movement in real time.

“The NYPD has to be prepared for every eventuality,” Michael Alcazar, a former NYPD detective told The U.S. Sun.

Alcazar described that the whole zone will be heavily controlled. “The area will be saturated with video surveillance, so we’re going to remove vehicles that are parked or don’t belong in the area,” he stated.

Specialized arrest squads will be stationed across the perimeter, prepared to respond to any disturbances.

“Their sole purpose is to be activated if they have to make an arrest for disorderly groups or criminal element,” Alcazar said.

Authorities will also establish designated processing places for detainees, with transport buses prepared to move people to central booking facilities if required.

Hollywood’s biggest names arrive under tight protection

Despite the heavy security presence, the Met Gala will still welcome some of the biggest names in entertainment and fashion, that includes Teyana Taylor, Zoë Kravitz, and Cara Delevingne. With increased surveillance, restricted access zones, and rapid-response teams on standby, officials aim to ensure the event proceeds without interruption while maintaining strict control over one of the most closely watched nights in global celebrity culture.
