Amazon app gets 'Join the chat' AI feature: How this real-time voice and text shopping tool works

Amazon has rolled out a new AI-powered feature called “Join the chat” in the Amazon Shopping app, designed to make product discovery more interactive. The feature allows users to ask questions in real time while listening to AI-generated audio summaries of products.



Amazon said customers can “ask a question such as ‘Is this coffee maker better for a beginner or someone with barista experience?’” and get instant responses. The AI hosts “deliver a tailored response grounded in product details, customer reviews, and other publicly available information,” before continuing the audio without disruption.




Amazon app feature turns shopping into a conversation



“Join the chat” builds on Amazon’s existing “Hear the highlights” feature, which provides short audio summaries on product pages. These summaries are presented by AI-generated hosts that explain product features, use cases, and insights using available data from listings and reviews.



With the new update, users can interact with these hosts through text or voice. When a question is asked, the system pauses the audio, responds, and then resumes the summary. Amazon describes the experience by saying, “customers aren't interrupting the experience—they're part of it.”



Real-time AI responses with context awareness



The feature is designed to understand context during conversations. Instead of repeating generic information, the AI considers what has already been discussed and adds new, relevant details.



Behind the scenes, the system uses multiple AI technologies. Each session begins with an AI-generated script that is dynamically updated as users ask questions. The response is then delivered through text-to-speech, maintaining a conversational tone consistent with the ongoing audio.



Amazon noted that “every question they ask influences what comes next,” allowing users to shape the flow of information as they browse.



How to use ‘Join the chat’ on the Amazon app



To access the feature, users need to open a product page in the Amazon Shopping app and tap on the “Hear the highlights” option, available below the product image on supported listings.



Once the audio starts, users can tap the raised-hand icon to enter “Join the chat” mode. They can then type a query or use voice input while continuing to browse the app.



The feature is currently available to users in the United States on both iOS and Android devices and supports millions of product listings, though not all items have audio summaries yet.



How Amazon is shifting toward interactive shopping experiences



With this update, Amazon is moving toward a more conversational approach to online shopping. Instead of relying only on written descriptions and reviews, users can ask specific questions and receive contextual answers instantly.



The feature builds on existing AI tools in e-commerce but introduces a more dynamic format that lets users guide the information they receive as they explore products.
