The Chennai Super Kings were dented early in the chase, as Jasprit Bumrah had Sanju Samson caught behind in the second over of the game. Ruturaj Gaikwad took the attack to the Mumbai Indians' bowlers and was joined by Urvil Patel, who scored a 12-ball 24 before falling to AM Ghazanfar at the crease. This brought Kartik Sharma to the crease, who, along with the skipper Gaikwad, steadied the innings.
The pair put on a 98-run stand off 75 balls as they led the Super Kings home with 11 balls to spare. Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 67 off 48 balls, while Kartik finished on an unbeaten 54 off 40 deliveries, his maiden half-century after his big-money acquisition in the auction.
